Bowmans Harbour Solar Array development
For the last 2 years Wolf Environmental has consulted with City of Wolverhampton Council and the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust to enable construction of a Solar Farm to power New Cross Hospital, assisting the step towards its collective goal of becoming net carbon zero by 2040. The new farm links directly to Wolverhampton’s largest hospital via a private wire connection stretching a half mile between the two sites.
The site, which was formerly mined for coal, was operated as a landfill until it was closed and capped in 1996-97. Since then, the Environment Agency has continued to regulate the site, ensuring monitoring and maintenance of the site is managed in accordance with the site’s environmental permit.
The 11-hectare solar farm is planned to produce 6.9 megawatts-peak per annum directly feeding New Cross Hospital. New Cross will be the first hospital in England to fully utilise and operate its own facility providing renewable energy. The subsequent anticipated £15-20 million saved over the next few years from the project will be pushed straight back into frontline healthcare.
City of Wolverhampton Council, as current operator of the closed Bowmans Harbour landfill, is duty bound to manage the landfill in its closed state by retaining the existing landfill monitoring infrastructure and avoid damage to the cap and environmental control systems.
Wolf Environmental have been pivotal in ensuring construction meets the required objectives whilst protecting the integrity of the landfill, consulting daily whilst designing and implementing quality assurance procedures for construction, assessing and monitoring the site and conducting remedial works where necessary. Our assistance has enabled the project to proceed despite the challenges faced with construction of this kind on a closed landfill site.
